Please Wash Your Hands!

While preparing for Ernie's transplant we learned a whole lot about minimizing his exposure to harmful germs. The number one way to do this is HANDWASHING. This is the hand washing station and the sign that greets us as we head in to the ABMT Clinic each day.

I must admit that in the past I often considered "quickly running my hands under water, maybe with a little soap" sufficient. However, I have since learned it is not. 15 seconds is the magic number my friends, with warm water and soap. Try counting next time you wash your hands and I think you'll be surprised by how long 15 seconds will seem. But please do it so we can all stop the unnecessary spread of germs that could prove deadly to someone whose immune system is compromised.

Everyone's best defense against infection is handwashing. Do it after you use the restroom, before you handle your food, after you handle your food, after you pet animals, when you use a grocery cart, after you've handled money, and on and on. If you don't have access to a sink with soap and water, use the convenient alcohol based instant hand sanitizers. Don't leave home without one!

  1. It's so true Linda, you don't realize to really wash your hands it takes alittle longer than a quick run under the water! About 10yrs or so ago I saw a Oprah show that was talking about our need to wash our hands and they suggested to sing thru "Happy Birthday" so that's what I do and how I taught Chase to wash her hands, it's an easy reminder of how long we should wash!! :)

We are continuing to pray for you guys and love reading all your posts!

  2. Wow, I have no idea how I stumbled upon your site. I just wanted to post and say good luck to Ernie, and I hope all goes well!

Oh, and the hand sanitizer I use is an alcohol free hand sanitizer called meditize. It's non flammable, which is definitely a plus! Washing your hands with soap and warm water is definitely the best option if it is available.

Once again, good luck to Ernie and the family. I hope everything goes well!
