On our recent scenic drive in the Appalachian Mountains, EZ and I noticed the abundance of quilt patterns on barns. We found ourselves saying, "Look there's another one!" and off the road I would go to snap a picture in a moment's notice. If anyone knows the particular significance of these, other than tourist pleasure, I would love to know. They certianly made for a pleasureable and colorful drive, as well as a sort of a "quilt treasure hunt" trying to see which barns had one displayed for all to see. Here the ones we captured on one particular afternoon drive in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee:
Happy Fall, enjoy your weekend, and don't forget to appreciate the beauty around you, including colorful barn quilts!
one was passed down to us that resembles the first picture you have, but the quilt-looking ones mean the same thing. it's a family crest!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sara! I wondered if they represented the families, just hadn't heard of that before.
ReplyDeletehere in east tenn they have a quilt trail that you can follow. it is a scenic drive and that takes you past old historical barns with the quilts painted on them. I'm sure there are official quilt trails you can follow all over the country. i painted one for the camp one year for christmas. it is not part of the official trail, just something kay had wanted. http://www.quilttrail.org/

ReplyDeletethat is crazy, never even thought of those things as anything more than decoration! very cool
ReplyDeleteWow Bonnie...we knew it was something special, but had no idea there was actually a quilt trail! Glad we ventured in to Tennessee that day and we will definitely try to follow more of the trail next time we head that way! Maybe it will lead us your way:)
